Billboard's list prioritizes artists who "have built a catalog that has stood the test of time" and "whose music has inspired others and created lasting trends," and has considered artists "who have unique and exceptional voices and who, overall, have had a significant impact on the Billboard charts."
Hakira, the absolute queen of Latin pop, leads the list, followed by Gloria Estefan at number 2 and Selena Quintanilla at number 3. It's no surprise to see Karol G, the best current reggaeton composer, at number 5, although she appears between Celia Cruz at number 4 and RocÃo Dúrcal at number 6.
Dúrcal is the first Spanish woman to appear on the list, but not the only one: RosalÃa is at number 14, Marta Sánchez at number 25, Ana Torroja at number 26, Rosario Flores at number 31, Isabel Pantoja at number 33, RocÃo Jurado at number 38, Alaska at number 39, and Natalia Jiménez at number 33.
The list includes legends like Mercedes Sosa, who takes the bow at number 10; modern icons like Julieta Venegas, who appears at number 29; new stars like Kali Uchis, who appears at number 35; and cult artists like Javiera Mena, who closes the list at number 50.

The Billboard ranking covers Latin music that has "transcended borders", such as that of Laura Pausini (9) or Anitta (45), but also that created within the United States by artists with Latin roots, such as Christina Aguilera or Jennifer Lopez, who appear in positions 18 and 19, respectively.
The notable presence of Mexican artists such as Yuri (34), ThalÃa (15) and the recently deceased Paquita la del Barrio (22) is a reminder that this is an American list. The emphasis on "pop" explains the absence of Yma Sumac, Amália Rodrigues and Lola Flores, although not Mina and her great disciple, Mónica Naranjo, who, unlike Javiera Mena, is "part of the mainstream." Although it should be emphasized that the list is limited to the impact of these artists in the United States.
