Deezer HiFi for Denon HEOS and Denon / Marantz HEOS built-in devices
Great, but I think this hasn’t been mentioned or announced anywhere yet, or am I wrong? Anyway,
Hi there
It is true that HiFi users can stream their songs in FLAC format to an AirPlay speaker without loss of quality. iOS converts the decoded audio data to ALAC, which is the Apple equivalent of FLAC, and is a lossless compression format.
About AirPlay 2, it consists mostly of 2 improvements compared to AirPlay:
- multiroom audio, which allows playing synchronously the same song on multiple speakers, it is supported by Deezer app
- fast streaming, which increases playback control reactivity and reduces the chance to face audio drops, this feature is not currently implemented in Deezer app
AirPlay 2 does not improve audio quality, the original version of AirPlay already offers CD-quality audio (16 bit 44.1/48 kHz)
I'm sorry if my question seems stupid to you. Tell me, if I run the deezer app on my iPhone with a hi-fi subscription, and send a stream using Airplay to my denon dnp-800ne does this mean that I listen to FLAC? The app displays the "HiFi" label.
Thanks for the honest feedback
Thanks for the reply! Even on a Sunday
Interesting thought, that it might already stream the FLAC file but its just the display thats not updated.
I think i can speak for all of us here that nobody cares whats displayed as long as its streaming the FLAC :). I also just checked on the DENON and no firmware update available. But if you guys are 100% certain that it should work, than we can reach out to DENON to get them to update the firmware.
In my experience, Denon/Marantz AVRs and AVPs with Heos will display the actual streaming format that they are receiving. This is visible within the Heos app, the AVR/AVP image sent to a TV, and by hitting the status button on the AVR/AVP.
Net, Deezer is apparently not able to stream FLAC to Heos.
Qobuz, Tidal, and Amazon Music HD do stream FLAC to Heos. I’ve tried them all and Heos displays the full FLAC resolution, up to 24 bit/192 kHz, depending on the native track resolution. Note that Qobuz requires BubbleUPnP to work with Heos, as there is no native Qobuz support on Heos.
I’m going to quit the Deezer trial due to lack of FLAC streaming to Heos.
I’m currently also running a Tidal trial. From a Heos integration standpoint, Tidal is the best lossless/FLAC streaming service, IMO. However, it costs more.
Thank you for your support
At the moment, what I'm trying to sort out is streaming FLAC via the HEOS app. I've detailed a comprehensive report to our devs last week and will keep an eye on it
By the way, it’s a bank holiday in the UK today, so UK staff might not work at all, except from home due to the Corona virus of course.
As I am not familiar with the HEOS system, is there a way to find out the amount of transferred megabytes per song maybe? That way you could at least make an educated guess if a song is in MP3 at 320kbps or in FLAC with at least 2-3 times the size (depending on its content).

OK, thanks for clarifying. As Rudi has stated, theoretically Deezer HiFi = FLAC streaming at CD specs with 16bit and 44.1khz (which is not HiRes which would use a higher bit depth and sample rate) should already work on HEOS systems, I think. Please correct me if I am wrong,
In the meantime you could use your Deezer HiFi account on a laptop or desktop computer and connect it via cable to your receiver, maybe with an external DAC between them if you own one. I don’t, so my PC stereo 3.5mm line out jack is connected via adapter and two good short cinch cables to my SAC monos which are placed behind the speakers for similar short cable connections.
Another option might be the new Chromecast version with your phone if your Denon receiver can be connected via Chromecast. Bluetooth does not know the FLAC format, so this would not work and/or not be ideal for lossless FLAC streaming.
Hi
As Deezer is not able to stream Hi-res files to the Denon receiver over Heos, the question was what your recommondation would be in order to get the hi res quality on my system.
Right now i started my trial period for Deezer in order to leverage to higher bitrate and stream high res to my system. But as its not available through heos I´m stuck with the same quality as Spotify, for a 50% higher price and a an far inferior UI (Spotify Connect is really light years a head of anyone else).
If there is no solution for it theres really no other choice at all then to switch over to Spotify. It really would be a shame as Deezer hit the perfect sweet spot. Its higher quality then Spotify but still cheaper then Tidal (which costs 20€ in the highest setting)
Hey
I'm not an expert on the peripherals and connections of that type.
Like the others i really want hifi via the heos app so that i can play hifi on my music marantz receiver. I have a hifi deezer account but i cant use it now!!
Hi there
Thank you so much for your contribution - that only means we need to dig deeper about this. I hope to be back soon with more info, please bear with me
However, like the poster above, I’m only getting 320 kbps MP3, so HiFi is not working.
Heos is on my Marantz AV7704 processor, which works with tracks up to 24 bit/192 kHz on Amazon Music HD and Qobuz. Also, my Heos app is up to date.
Hi. I also just tried to stream the flac file but for me it's also just MP3 320kps. I made sure that all settings are on highest quality and I tried several tracks. What am I doing wrong
If I had to guess, I’d say the 3 most widely used audio component streaming hardware platforms globally are Sonos, Denon/Marantz Heos, and Yamaha MusicCast.
Deezer HiFi FLAC works on 2 of the 3, right?
I feel Deezer should make Denon/Marantz Heos a priority for HiFi FLAC, as Denon/Marantz AVRs and Processors are very popular. Also, I believe that the folks who own traditional audio components and nice speakers are probably some of the more fervent people when it comes to sound quality, so getting Deezer HiFi FLAC to these systems would be of high interest to these people (self included).
If Deezer does implement HiFi FLAC on Denon/Marantz Heos, please implement Favorites/My Music.
While Amazon Music HD does play at full resolution on Denon/Marantz Heos, the lack of one’s personal library Favorites/My Music was a deal breaker for me personally, as you have to search for tracks/albums each time.
So Rudy, how can we test Deezer Hifi on HEOS ? We can help you but share the process to test the compliance between HEOS and Deezer !
I switched my subscription to HiFi because of this announcements and there is only MP3 - 320 kbps on my Marantz NR1200 in HEOS display ‘now playing’. Should we wait on HEOS update? Any extra information would be helpful...
I'm very interested by the answer because yesterday i subscribed to deezer hi-fi and got disappointed to see my heos streaming at 320 kbps. I own a denon avr.
Hi @Rudi,
What should we have to do to test? Do we need to wait for Denon/HEOS to push a software update to their devices (their new / recent DRA-800H in my case)? Just checked: the device has the latest firmware available (at this instant, might different by tomorrow or in some days).
I just turned it up, and Deezer still streams the MP3 320 Kbps content for now (there is a display on the device, along with the Status key, that allows to reveal the format of the stream currently playing).
So we’re probably missing some instructions to join in the test.
Anyway, thanks for trying and to listening to us.
