Flow repeats tracks

I have found this as well, it is like the algo sees that a track has been played so bumps it further up the list to be played. Same with some of the playlists, always playing the same tracks (in different lists). It never seems to delve into my favourites (which has now hit the 2000 limit, another significant issue) but often just loops around the same set of tracks.

On the plus side it has finally stopped playing me what I can only assume were promoted tracks like Justin Bieber, which is nowhere near my taste.

It is the single most complained-about feature of Flow, and as a relatively new user I have seen many people complain about it here on this forum in many different threads.

Yup, it’s embarrassing. I’ve been here for 3 years, but the problem has existed for longer than that - at least 4 years. I just don’t understand how this hasn’t been resolved yet. I have a coding background and I’m sure the repeating songs issue could be fixed with just a few lines of code.

I was part of the Flow 2.0 testing period and it was much better, although the solution they implemented was to simply not let a song play if had last played within the last 30 days. Seems a bit too arbitrary for me, but at least it worked. They also implemented some other changes that I wasn’t so keen on, but the end of repeating songs was a major improvement for me. It’s a real shame that they couldn’t deploy Flow 2.0.

It's all we can do really @gdr @János Elek, let our teams know about your experience. But the truth is that they're constantly working on improvements, which perhaps you don't see but other users do.

The good thing is that we're actually developing an update to Flow. It'll give you a bit more control over what you get and I honestly hope you'll like it. Stay tuned for more info, I'll be hopefully announcing in the homepage when the time comes :relaxed:

I’ve been using Deezer for just over a year now, and the Flow algorithm has been consistently terrible. It’s not bad at finding other music that I might like, but it keeps repeating the same songs over and over again, whether they are my favourites or not.

I have an idea to fix this. I think it would be relatively simple to implement but would have a hugely positive impact. Every track played should have a “Last Played” property. When Flow is looking for the next song to play, if the song’s “Last Played” date is within the last week (or whatever time period) then Flow re-rolls and randomly selects another song. This would help to keep the Flow fresh.

I'll be passing your comments on @maxkshaw

Our Flow is getting some improvements soon, perhaps they can help with the fresh experience you're describing as well :relaxed:

Flow is really very very bad. I gave it a chance today after about two months and it played about an hour. Then I turned the phone off and on and the flow started playing the same songs again in the same order. Incredibly. I like daily mixes but flow is really a joke.

Flow is getting much better this year.

As Rudi, the community manager commented few below stating that Flow is getting some improvements soon, perhaps they can help your situation as well and they will. Very big.

Please stay for a while to see it yourself, @Placido09 :)

Sorry to hear that FLOW repeating tracks.

FLOW. may be best in the business to recommend tracks, but it surely does not work for everyone. Not even for me all the time. If you get unrelated tracks, skip or ban them as soon as possible.

FLOW is learning and the best of all they seem to work on improving FLOW feature-wide.

We're aware of some of its limitations @alice07 great input from you! Our devs really appreciate this kind of feedback so that we know exactly how it feels with real examples :thumbsup_tone2:

Thanks for your feedback @XionicFire @Ivan16 @maxkshaw. Many users want less repetition in the flow and we need absolutely to address that.
I have forwarded your message to our developers and they mentioned that it is a bit more complicated than a 2 lines of code fix as it has an impact in the interface and also implies mobile development. Also, flow is considered to be a simple button.
Devs are fully aware of the problem and this is a priority now. We have a dedicated datscientist team that has been working on that precise problem for several weeks, since the release of the new flow version in December.
They have collected first some data to previously analyse when a repeated track gets on the nerve of our users.
AB test is the next step, and once I have news on any fix or implementation I will let you know.
Thanks for your patience and all your feedback. It is very much appreciated it.:nerd:

Is it normal to have several tracks repeated way too frequently when you are in the Flow feature?

Hi Ben, depends on how many tracks you have added to your favourites. If there are not that many tracks, Flow doesn't have enough data to recommend many different tracks. That should change, if you add more tracks to the list.
Or are you talking about tracks that you've already disliked?

It means that with 0 favourite tracks, Flow is unable to find music for you based on what you like, because it doesn't know what you like ;)
Please add some artists, albums, playlists and songs to your favourites so Flow can generate satisfying playlists for you 🙂

Can we request that flow be coded to improve the songs it plays to change the frequency? The lack of diversity in the songs it plays is frustrating even though it plays songs I like it plays them too often

Hi there 🙂 We've passed this feedback on to the team already, but I will pass on yours too. I can't promise anything for now, but we check for updates with the team regularly. And I hope that there will be changes in the future 🙂

I have the same problem, over 300 liked songs, several liked artists, lists and albums and there's still a song that gets played about 7 or 8 times in a couple of hours and there are songs that I haven't heard in a while. At this rythm I will remove it from my liked songs (as it happened before with other song, but I thought it was a problem of the song but it's not.)
Here's the proof... Look at the "Name of Love"

Any update on this Flow algorithm please to reduce the recurrence of the same songs? It's very frustrating in an otherwise very good app

surely it's easy enough to add this in though, you can remove a song from flow so all I'm thinking is to limit the recurrence to perhaps a few set intervals - eg don't play for 3 days, a week, a month, 6 months (say) or whatever. Flow is generally really good but this issue is annoying and from the posts on this I'm not alone in the view. Anyway forward it on yes please @Flo.Deezer

Thank you for your input again @gdr
We're discussing this and other popular ideas with our product managers and devs. Hopefully we can bring you more updates after that 🙂

@Rudi Not available in the Bose soundtouch where I play 90% of my music

I have the Bose SoundTouch app and it’s a piece of junk. It displays only 25 albums per artist, you can’t sort artists, you can’t move forward or backward in a track, etc, etc. Absolute rubbish. Bose lets itself down mightily with its software; the hardware sounds great but I think they’ll die if they don’t get their apps sorted out and soon.

… we would have to set up a whole tag system ...

Not really; you could simply use a hash of the artist + album + track name. It wouldn’t need to be exact so you could simply save a sub-string of hash. 16 characters should give you plenty of immunity from repeats.

time for an update on this issue - Flow still has it’s favourite songs which are sometimes based on my favourites but often not…..  the algorithm just needs a counter added or timestamp so it knows what it has played recently and chooses from some of the other hundreds of songs I like, or hundreds of songs like that but not always the same tens of songs

Sure @gdr I've been working on a few users' reports on Flow recently, so our devs will continue to work on this :thumbsup_tone2:

Hey @alice07

Thanks for reporting this to us. I'll be passing your comments to the relevant teams here at Deezer.

Just so you know, our teams are working on providing a whole new integration with Sonos devices, as we're partners as well - stay tuned to the community :v_tone2:

Any updates ?

I have repetitive playlists all the time. I have more than a few favs in my list, but the music is literally the same all the time. Same songs, same artists… I’ve been using Deezer for a couple of years and this behavior is ongoing. 🤔
