Is Deezer app optimised for macOS on M1 (silicon) chip? Has relatively high CPU usage.

Userlevel 1

My computer becomes noticeably slower when Deezer is running. It’s most noticeable when there’s already a fair amount of other apps running.

This is on a MacBook Air M1 computer.

Whilst the CPU usage isn’t anything extreme, it does often sit at around 12% for “Deezer Helper (Renderer)” is simply playing music in the background.

What is concerning is that when actively engaging with the app, CPU for that process readily jumps up to 40% +.

That seems high to me … for activities that I would think are fairly lite weight. I get less CPU usage from massive applications like Adobe apps, etc.

Here’s some examples:

After clicking on Explore

After clicking on Albums

After clicking on “Music”

After clicking on an Artists name, and brining up that artist’s page

Is this something Deezer developers are aware of?

Is Deezer optimised for M1 / silicon chips?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Good day, apple silicon is out quite long and the app has issues on said macs. Please consider making it run under silicon natively.

Yes @dee_dirk, that would be great!

All I can tell you at the moment, something will happen soon, but we don’t have any date yet. 😐

Any updates, I let you know guys! 👌🏼

Take care.🙂

@Yula - Help please. 😉

A community manager in the past did mention about ‘possible’ development of a M1 version, but it would be interesting to see if this is still a possibility or moved to the back burner (especially with the release shortly of the MacBook Pro & Air M2 versions).

The Mac 'app' is a Chromium web browser instance with a bunch of supporting processes wrapped up in an Electron wrapper that looks like a Mac app. Despite appearances there's nothing lite about it. Don't expect it to get any better as long as they use Electron or a similar web wrapper.

If you only listen to music on your computer while it's connected to the internet, using your regular web browser is likely to be more efficient.

Just upgraded to version 6.0.10 (fully rebranded Deezer Desktop), and I find it quite outrageous that it is still not a Universal or arm64 binary.

Multiple months later, but for the discussion about performance not likely to improve, these are false statements. Performance using Electron will very much improve after Deezer has changed a single configuration line in their package.json file, namely to change the arch value from “x64” to “universal”. It won’t be as good as a native app, but it will at least be decent.

The last paragraph of the official Electron documentation explains why: https://www.electronjs.org/blog/apple-silicon

Deezer is among the very last Electron app to not have made the switch.

Before it, the following ElectronJS apps succeeded to change one line of configuration and build on arm64 on my laptop :)

  • Microsoft Teams
  • Skype
  • GeoGebra Classic 6
  • Discord
  • Visual Studio Code
  • Windows 95 (the application)
  • Mattermost
  • StarUML
  • VMWare Fusion
  • Redis Insight V2
  • Docker Desktop
  • GeoGebra Graphing Calculator
  • Hyper
  • GitHub Desktop
  • Insomnia
  • Adobe UXP Developer Tool
  • GitKraken
  • Molotov TV
  • Trello
  • Diagrams.net
  • AdGuard for Safari
  • Slack
  • Bootstrap Studio
  • MongoDB Compass

It’s about time! The only ElectronJS apps that did not make the switch are:

  • Deezer (why?)
  • Moodle Desktop (Abandoned, uses Moodle Mobile instead)
  • Unity Hub (Unity itself is Apple Silicon ready)
  • Neo4j Desktop (the Neo4j Browser is Apple Silicon ready)
  • PIA (their latest update was released before Apple Silicon, and the upcoming release will be compatible)
  • GravitDesigner (abandoned)
  • DS Update (I guess car manufacturers are not experts with software)

and that’s it. Really, Deezer should not be on that bottom list anymore!

@Sergey.Ambaryan

As far as I know, there is no plan for a Mac version of the desktop app adapted to an M processor in the near future. 😑

Incidentally, I also have an M-Mac and would be happy about an optimized desktop app.

Appreciate the follow ups! You’re awesome. 😁 @Leonídia.Deezer

Just a consideration: With the M-processor on the Mac, it is possible to use iPad versions. However, the developer must explicitly allow it. 🤓

Actually … I now see that the browser version doesn’t allow for downloading music (makes sense, now that I think it through). So looks like I’ll be sticking with the App.

Hey @Jonathan789

The desktop app is not optimized for M1. 😐

Any update regarding apple silicon port?

Any update regarding apple silicon port? It is not a big deal for developers but more than 1 year passed from releasing first m1 mac has been rolled out.

Hi @archaic_email @Olh01, I've just received an update from our developers, and they mentioned that they're actively working on a solution for the issue. However, there are still some milestones to address before it's fully resolved.

Given this, I would like to ask a bit more patience until they can completely resolve the problem.

Thank you very much for your understanding.

Hi @dugeem thanks for raising this topic. Unfortunately in coming months there isn’t anything plan to move in that direction.

Nevertheless, I have asked again if there is any plans for 2024.

I will keep everybody update as soon as something new arise.

Indeed. That’s a good idea. Will do that.

Although I’ve downloaded so much music via the App (I have relatively limited data plan where I am), I am loathed to download it all again. Might have to just do it … better now than later.

I figured I’d chime in and mention, that, while we do need a Apple Silicon optimized version regardless, you can always install the web version as a PWA to get a desktop like experience. It’s technically more secure to do it that way anyway and operates very similar to a desktop app, and can play full HiFi.

In Chrome this is done via Save and Share > Create Shortcut and then mark it to open as it’s own window (it may do this by default now, don’t recall).

Safari can also do it: https://support.apple.com/en-us/104996

Again, not the perfect solution and not trying to discredit anyone’s frustration over the issue, just that there is a sort of workaround that is a pretty good experience.

Hi @planedrop, thank you for your valuable tips and detailed advice.

I'm sure our user will appreciate the workaround you suggested.

Salutations

It is now 2024 and yet there is still no Apple Silicon (aka ARM) support in the Deezer Desktop app for macOS.

Beyond disappointing for many.

Please sort out the Desktop app or at least allow the Deezer iPadOS variant to be used under macOS.

It’s time.

Regards

I would like to voice my support with an optimized version for the current iMac/Macbook versions.  The one we currently have is not efficient.

Yes @Mikauto11 I saw it toо this morning, and expected to be optimized for Mac M series, but no, its still Intel. And Spotify works extremely well on M series, fast and very optimized.
