Mix your friend's music with yours on Shaker

Music brings us together…

except when your musical tastes don't please everyone!

And yes, it's not always easy to find the right atmosphere when it's time to choose the playlist, everyone has their own music library, their tastes, and their streaming platform. Deezer was on board, so we created Shaker!

The new feature allows you to play your Shaker group's songs from any streaming platform, because we know that everyone has their app preferences (some better than others 😏). So if your friends or loved ones use another music application, they can listen to Shaker group content on their platforms, and you can also import their music.

How does Shaker work?

  • Click here for the desktop version (shaker.deezer.com) or from your app in the Beyond Streaming section.
  • You can then create a Shaker group and add up to 14 people, even if they don't have a Deezer account. Shaker allows you to listen to music on different platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music), but of course we hope that your loved ones will also join Deezer!
  • You can listen to a unique mix created by Shaker, with a selection of 75 tracks determined from the preferences and listening activity of the members of the group.

Want to know who you are most compatible with?

We're not a dating app, but Shaker offers a "Fun facts" tab that displays the musical compatibility between you and your friends, based on your shared favourites. Find out which of your friends you have the most musical similarities with!

It's time to create your first group!

Share your best compatibility rates in the comments…

Will anyone be able to reach 100% 😱?

Yes! I love the new feature! I'm gonna, try reach 100% somehow!

🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

It’s great to see new and useful features added. Keep it up Deezer. 👍

Is there a How To on this yet, mainly for non-Deezer users? Sent friends who use Spotify a link however it's all French to them...literally

I can’t get it to play more tan 30 seconds? And I got the French interface as well …

I would also say that there’s no cast button, but that’s been broken for more than 5 years anyway.

Hello @ash.pegz @MrHaroldA you can find a guide and FAQ’s in the following article on our support page: https://support.deezer.com/hc/en-gb/articles/14366017913373-Shaker-

Thanks :)

Wow, you should really do something about that color scheme ;)

Thanks Jaime, that’s going to help a lot but first, do you know where they can change the language to English after accepting the cookies?

Did you get a fix for this? My invites have been sent in French too.

Hi @MrHaroldA @ash.pegz @Alwyn Fisher , thanks for reaching out!

Regarding the issue of music playing only for 30 seconds when adding your own music, this happens during the preview phase. However, if you go to the playlist, you can listen to the entire track.

As for the French interface, the app appears according to the language of your browser or smartphone.

To use Shaker as a non-Deezer user, follow these steps:

  1. Click the link received from your friend to join their Shaker group or go to shaker.deezer.com.
  2. Follow the steps to create your Shaker profile.
  3. You will be asked to import your existing music library from another streaming platform. Connect to the respective platform before the import can begin.
  4. Once the import has begun, it will complete in the background. In the meantime, enjoy the mix, discover shareable fun insights such as compatibility scores between you and your friends, and invite more people to enjoy the Shaker experience!

If you want to deepen your knowledge on this topic, please access this article: Shaker

If you need additional help, please don't hesitate to let me know.

@Leonídia.Deezer

Addition to point 3:
The import must be carried out, otherwise you will just create an empty Shaker profile with which you cannot do anything. A subsequent manual import is currently not possible.

I love this new feature !

From my Deezer account, I send an Shaker invitation to a friend. They recieve the email. As expected. But when click on it it never gives them a screen to create a Shaker account. I see two memebers in my Group presumably me and my friend. But, I don’t see their Spotify music.

My friend was never given a chance to create a shaker account.

How do I fix that?

Is there any way to play the playlist through other platforms like Spotify? I went through the effort of getting a mix with my friends who use Deezer, but they've only been able to find a way to play single songs in Spotify which unfortunately really kills the purpose of Shaker for us.

That's exactly the thing I ran into. Shaker could be a whole lot better if you could import the mix and playlist in your Spotify or whatever account. Adding a link to TuneMyMusic would do the trick.

Hi @Daniëlle Kriekaard @HansHa, thanks for your message.

Happy to hear that you join with our Deezer user the Shaker Feature.

To be able to get the full experience of this feature user from other stream app/platform need to download the Deezer application.

It is important to emphasise that it is not necessary to subscribe to any Deezer plan to enjoy all features that Shaker offers.

I hope everyone kip enjoying the Shaker feature with your friends

Hi @Leonida.deezer

Thanks,

But this is not the answer I was hoping for. I can understand that Deezer wants to attract more users. But in this way you might as well start a collaborative playlist.
The streaming world needs a more cross platform solution IMHO.

So far I understand that shaker is not really available on desktop (at least in web) and users from different services cannot create a playlist on their own platform. This is frankly underwhelming and shortsighted from the product perspective.

For Deezer to attract new users from larger platforms it needs to make it comfortable for users to stay here. Switching streaming platforms is hard because you lose connection with your friends and family. People would feel much more confident in switching if they had a feature that would allow them to collaborate with their circle on other platforms. Implementing collaborative auto-playlists or something like cross-platform share links would eliminate the feeling of separation when switching streaming services. Right now as a Deezer user I feel like “that guy” with whom nobody shares music because everyone is on Spotify and lost a neat collab playlist with my girlfriend who also still uses Spotify. This feature does literally nothing to solve it.

Instead we get a half-baked MVP solution which works for some cases but mostly is useless. Unfortunately it feels like the majority of Deezer features are made like that.

I am thinking of switching back to Spotify already, looking at the latest feature developments it seems that Deezer has no good solutions for retaining the userbase and opted for fast development of basic functionality instead of polishing the existing stuff. Like constantly using a potentially neat service in perpetual beta state all while having no connection with the users of mainstream services.

Hello @PotatoOverlord thank you for sharing your vision about Shaker. I have just shared it with our team responsible for this project.

There is still space to improve this tool and some changes will occur during the next quarters.

Looking forward to see what is coming.
