Need Parental Controls in the Deezer Family Plan for teenagers (not kids)

I see a few posts in the forum with people asking if this can be done, but do not see it as an actual suggestion in the “Got an idea?” forum.

When a person subscribes to the family plan, they should have some settings they can control for any member on the plan - whether it is a kids account or not.  There are times when you want a teen to have access to some songs, but not all of them and certainly more than the kids account.  Right now there is no way to restrict content for that sub account (which you can do on other services).

It would be really great if you could go a step beyond the other services and give a few options in parental controls (1) Do Not allow explicit content (2) Restrict certain songs (3) Restrict certain artists.

Hi @WCity, we already have it:

How to create a Deezer Kid profile

You can create a Kid profile for children under 12 for child-friendly tailored content. The process to create a Kid profile is the same as a Profile just follow these additional steps:

  • Select the checkbox Check_Box_Pink.jpg next to Kid profile on deezer.com (or use the slider Slider_Download_Edited.png on mobile to Activate Deezer Kids)
  • You will also need to review our Privacy Policy and tick the box next to Consent for Minor Account (use the slider Slider_Download_Edited.png on mobile)
  • Select Create (Create Profile on mobile) to save the profile

@Rafael., I don’t think you read the details in my post.  This would be for teenagers.  The Kids account does not cut it.  Other services offer this type of feature it is a major draw back for the family account at Deezer.

Hey @WCity

Thanks for coming back.

Have you also tried toggling the explicit filter on from the app's display settings? This can be done on a 'normal' profile, which should then be more suitable for teenagers.

For more info, please see here and let me know how it helps :v_tone2:

The problem with that suggestion is the teen can go in and undo the setting very easily themselves and I would never know they had made the change.  Again, other services offer the feature I want and you are behind.  I really like how the app and software work for Deezer as an individual user.  This is just a major flaw when wanting a family plan and is forcing me to use a different service.

By the way this should not be marked as already exists because it does not already exist.

Thank you for coming back and for the further explanation @WCity

This is a very good suggestion, Deezer is interested in. I've changed the status of your suggestion and passed the comments on :v_tone2:

I think it is a great idea to have an option of asking a password for inappropriate content. That's how you can make using safe for people who want to be blocked to in appropriate content all the time. For example parents who buy a premium account for there child

Thank you for your time.

I gave it a vote. I think especially on Family plans it could be awesome!

I completely agree with this. I am searching for a safe platform for my kids to listen to music, where they can also grow up and I can change the limits to fit them as they mature. I would like to add possibilities for restrictions on podcasts as well. Right now I don’t have any control on the podcast recommendations. I cannot even say dislike to a podcast.

This is my big complaint with all of these services: they think there's either

  • A young child, who we want to fed Kids songs
  • An adult, with a full access to anything from songs with profanity to porn podcasts

I don't care the occasional bit of profanity, I can police that. But when the service is distributing adult podcasts and I have no way of filtering that without infantalizing my 11 year old, that's a problem.

The podcasts are a major concern for me. I only recently joined Deezer as a trial to find an alternative to Spotify due to my son finding Spotify's podcast feature.

We are fairly permissive regarding music content, but of course we do keep an eye on it. By permissive, I mean that we are okay with our teen listening to plenty of music with "explicit content" ratings.

However, podcasts are a completely different story, as they range in topic from entertainment categories to political content and even pornographic content by those who will play cat and mouse with a moderation team. These are video podcasts as well, so I will let you use your imagination regarding the content. I consider certain political content as similarly damaging, for teen boys, and that content is also difficult to effectively apply ratings to.

I simply can't move forward with Deezer if I am unable to perform my own moderation as a parent. Parental controls centered around parents of young children absolutely need to exist, but are also completely inappropriate and useless for a parent of a teen.

I understand that video content is a very lucrative part of any platform like Spotify or Deezer. I also understand that (even with AI), it's almost impossible to moderate at scale. Without a way to disable it for a sub-account, this makes its inclusion a blocker for informed parents.

I doubt Deezer would be able to implement the changes needed for my own needs within my trial window: that's a pretty unrealistic expectation for a platform. I do like this platform so far, though. I believe that I've outlined the use case clearly enough, so if the change is implemented I will likely be back.
