I recently paid to upgrade from premium to family but we still can’t use the app simultaneously. I’ve checked my apple subscription and it’s switched to family. Is this a problem on my side or yours?

A direct upgrade from Apple will be booked, but will not affect your subscription. This problem has been around for a long time.
I recommend that you cancel the family booking and then cancel your premium subscription. As soon as you are on Status Free, you can book the family subscription. With Deezer, the subscriptions are a little cheaper than with Apple, as there are no fees.

It has finally reverted to free. Is the family subscription I paid for going to activate or is it lost?
