Chromecast Issue Collection

Hi,

as you know there have been issues with the Deezer Chromecast integration for a while now and we have not seen any improvement on the situation, yet. Quite contrary, it seems to have gotten even worse.

I have therefore collected all the issues I'm seeing so far with as much detail as I can.

I urge you to act on these issues as some of them are absolutely critical for HIFI users with Chromecast.

I have done the following things to troubleshoot:
  • Exclude Deezer app from battery optimization
  • Kill App
  • Cleared SmartCache
  • Uninstalled App
  • Tried beta version of the app
  • Restart Chromecast
  • Reset Chromecast
  • Tried all of the issues with the following devices: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
  • Restart Smartphone
Issue 1 - Chromecast Audio Dropouts (as discussed here https://en.deezercommunity.com/troubleshooting-and-tips-4/chromecast-audio-issues-streaming-interrupted-4888)
Criticality: CRITICAL (listening through Chromecast is not possible without issues)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Audio (connected through 5GHz as well as 2,4Ghz)
Wifi Router: Google Wifi
Audio Quality: HiFi
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 2-4 months ago (not with the initial Chromecast HiFi streaming update)

After some time (5-20 minutes) the playback on the Chromecast Audio starts to dropout for half a second to 20 seconds. The rate of dropouts start increasing from there. The behavior can be reset by completely resetting the Chromecast Audio.

Issue 2 - Chromecast Ultra Playback skips within the track
Criticality: CRITICAL (listening through Chromecast is not possible without issues)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet)
Audio Quality: HiFi
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 4-6 weeks ago

For some tracks the Chromecast Ultra starts skipping through the song seemingly randomly (forward/backward). This happens right from the start. I have found no way to fix this issue.
Example tracks for which I can reproduce this:
Boztown - Back to the back
Culprate - Whispers, Pt. 1 (Album: Deliverance)
Culprate - The Memoirs of Gregory Otterman (Album: Deliverance)
Culprate - Acid Rain (Album: Deliverance)

Issue 3 - Chromecast freezes up after playback pause
Criticality: SEVERE (Chromecast restart is necessary)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet), Chromecast Audio (connected through WiFi)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet, Wifi)
Audio Quality: Hifi, High
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 2-4 months ago (not with the initial Chromecast HiFi streaming update)

After the playback on Chromecast has been on pause for some time it is possible that the next track cannot be played. The Android app shows the change of track and seems to be loading while the Chromecast app is inresponsive (at least this can be observed on the Chromecast Ultra which is connected to a TV). The Chromecast app cannot be changed to another app (Youtube, Netflix), instead a full restart is necessary). It is not possible to disconnect from the Deezer app.

Issue 4 - Chromecast cannot play next track
Criticality: SEVERE (Chromecast restart is necessary)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet), Chromecast Audio (connected through WiFi)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet, Wifi)
Audio Quality: Hifi (might also occur on other quality levels)
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 1-2 months ago

Sometimes it is possible that the next track cannot be played when switching to it manually. The Android app shows the change of track and seems to be loading. The Chromecast app also shows that its loading however no progress is being made for several minutes. Switching to other tracks is possible, however the initial track can only be played after killing the Android app and disconnecting from the Chromecast app, sometimes only after a restart of the Chromecast.

Issue 5 - Chromecast Audio does not buffer correctly (might be connected to Issue 1)

If the Chromecast's connection speed is insufficient for reliable playback (because there are other devices on the network using up bandwidth) it does not buffer the track correctly, instead playing 1 second of audio followed by 2-3 seconds of silence with another second of playback afterwards.

Assumptions:
Issue 1,2 and 5 are pointing to issues with the playback implementation on the Chromecast not being optimized for lossless playback.

Issue 3 and 4 might be connectivity issues between the smartphone and the Chromecast.

Issue 3 looks like an issue where the Chromecast-App gets into a deadlock state.

Personal opinion:
I switched to Deezer for its offer of HiFi audio and a less bug-ridden app than Tidal's. I stayed for Flow and the UX of the mobile app.

However since HiFi + Chromecast is how I personally use my 'big' audio system the last few weeks have been less and less enjoyable with Deezer as functionality that is being advertised (and which I am paying for) is not being delivered.

I hope for these issues (especially the critical ones) to be resolved swiftly, ideally with an issue tracker as it seems I'm not the only one seeing these issues.

I also hope that there will be regression tests added for the Chromecast apps including HiFi functionality as these issues were introduced over time.

And last but not least, while I understand that these issues are hard to troubleshoot (especially due to possibly being an issue with the mobile app or the chromecast app) it should not be the customer's duty to write detailed error reports. Maybe it is worth investing in a sufficient automated test suite as well as a good feedback tool within the mobile app that allows for useful crashtests.

Best Regards,
Alex

Our current Chromecast integration hasn't been stable for quite some time. So we're working on a new integration, using Google's new protocol - Cast. It should improve the whole experience, and we expect to have more updates about it before the end of this year. In the meantime, please see this topic for tips and workarounds, and try reinstalling the app and restarting your internet router to see if it helps. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello @p l allison, that’s very nice of you  Thanks about thinking about the other users, that’s very appreciated.

Have a very nice day!

When opening deezer in Chrome the tab kept closing, turns out it was the deezer control extention for Chrome that was the problem. After disabling it deezer opens fine in Chrome so I have now removed it.

Just wanted to let you know, incase anyone else is having the same problem.

Hello @bokolobs, you’re right indeed, we’ve asked our teams to add again the logo as it confuses many users, they’re working on that.

Have a nice day

Hello, I read about the new chromecast update. So I thought to myself "well lets give deezer another shot since i like it more than Spotify and it has better sound." low and behold it acctually works now and sounds good.

But, i have no HIFI icon when i stream to chromecast, it goes away when i start streaming. So I am now wondering wether I'm playing in lowest quallity or if its only a bug regarding the icon? You guys should know, so please tell me so that i can end my subscribtion if I'm not getting what I am paying for.

I read somewhere from here that, although the Hi-Fi label is not showing, it is streaming FLAC on Chromecast Audio for those who have Hi-Fi plans/audio setting. Maybe @Rudi can verify?

Hello @GDSaihttaM, thanks a lot for reporting this and letting us know what you did to make it work again. Don’t hesitate to get back to us if needed

Have a nice day!

Could it be that chromecast support in the webapp is broken now? Always used deezer in google chrome, casting used to work but not any more (Unable to cast www.deezer.com). Tried on OS X, Linux and Windows. Other stuff still works from the browser (spotify, youtube...)

(Don't know how long this is the case; didn't use deezer that much recently)

seemed to be a temporary outage; works again on the same machine… (did try hard refreshes, cleaning cookies,… rebooting before posting here though)

Hi there @darkdevil1988

Thanks for letting us know - apologies for the inconvenience. Have you tried clearing the app's cache to see if it helps? Let us know, it's the first report around this and our new integration that I've seen :thumbsup_tone2:

Hello

I have some issues with Chromecast. On my Galaxy note 10 plus with android 10 and my integrated Chromecast on Philips TV with android tv 9.

When I playing some songs from Flow I see that after arround 5 songs the list playing the first 5 songs again and again...

It sounds like Chromecast loading 5 songs and don't refreshing anymore.

When I play a playlist on Chromecast I don't have any issues.

Hi there peeps @NJP2020, Allan @bigkid and @TJM4

Thanks a lot for your precious feedback. The integration has been rolled out and @NJP2020 is right, we're still working to bring to Google Home devices. It doesn't need any push, it's on the cards.

This is the feedback our devs need to move forward, so thank you for your support and contribution. I'll be forwarding your comments to the teams right away

I think that is because from what I can tell, the new Chromecast implementation has not yet rolled out to Google Home.

This is painfully frustrating, because all of the supported music services on Google Home have problems (Youtube Music and Spotify have sound quality issues, GPM is about to be replaced by Youtube Music). Apple Music and Tidal sound great, but don't have voice control support (only casting from other devices).

The current Deezer cast implementation sounds great, but is unreliable. Any update on when the new cast implementation is likely to be released?

PS I should mention that the new Chromecast implementation on iOS/Android is awesome! I can't wait to use it on Google Home with voice control.

Thanks.

Hi all. I have been a user of Deezer for some time, but only recently bought  a Google Home Max (and two nests).  Originally I started with a free Deezer account but have since upgraded following the purchase of the Google Home Max to Premium and now HiFi. Every time I play music on the Max, it stops playback usually after about 30min. If I then command it to start playback again, it will play and then stop after a shorter period of time. The more I do this the shorter the time music is played. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Google Home and Deezer, I have rebooted my router and unlinked and re-linked Deezer as the default music player. All of these, several times. Thinking it might be the wi-fi I have since put a wi-fi access point very close to the Max. None of these changes have resolved the problem.  I was hoping that the fix talked about last month might assist, but no, not in my case.  I have tested the Max with Spotify and the fault does not occur.  Appreciate any advice on what I might try next.

My phone is a Samsung S8+

Android Version 9

Google Home Version 2.19.1.18
Deezer Version 6.1.24.99

Home Max Firmware 195690

Cast Firmware Version 1.46.195690

Cheers,

Allan

Hi @srdjan73, that's amazing!

 @Alex Panda@FEIZINGER@PaetZe@HyperX , what do you think about @srdjan73 's solution above?

I'm using 5 gigahertz and experience dropouts and lockups all the time with the Deezer app. This doesn't happen with other apps.

Deezer rev 6.1.24.99. Deezer HiFi subscription trying if it will work for me.

Pioneer receiver with built-in Chromecast.

Samsung Note 8 phone casting to Pioneer

Netgear nighthawk router

Live in single family home. Not too many signals to interfere.

When I first start Deezer and start the Chromecast to the Pioneer, it takes about 10 seconds to start. The Deezer app says loading will be ready in a few seconds and that takes about 10 seconds for the music will start playing. Also when I hit pause it can take up to 10 seconds before the Music stops. This also happens when I tell the Deezer app to stop chromecasting. The music will continue to play for many many seconds.

I'm looking for a high fidelity lossless music service. I'm trying Deezer hi-fi. I like it because I can cast it for my Google devices or my phone to my Pioneer receiver. The problem is it isn't reliable to cast to my receiver and good speakers. I have to fiddle with it about every 15 or 20 minutes. The iwhole point is to be able to listen to the Hi-Fi quality on great speakers. Please help or I'll be looking elsewhere.

Hi @smoker9

Thanks for reaching out. The label wasn't removed, our developers are looking into what has happened. We'll keep you updated.

About your Android phone, it needs to be compatible with the technology too, the app is ready - have you checked that? In the meantime, is this happening to all tracks? Our HiFi catalogue is quite extensive but it could also be that the tracks are only available in HQ.

Hi there @aleck-x @menya @iljafranken

We're happy that it's working better. Thank you so much for the feedback! More info to come soon

It's HiFi ready, so don't worry about the indicator :thumbsup_tone2:

Rudi, I have a hifi subscription.  When I used to stream to my chromecast audio...it would shiw the hifi symbol.…

Now you are saying they just decided to get rid of it?? Doesnt make sense. Also, you guys said we should now have hifi quality while streaming to an android phone......all i see is hq symbol. No hifi.....please help..

With both of my issues.

Hello @dominikz, the new Chromecast integration is available since the 6.1.20.58. Thank you for your feedback, I hope we will be able to improve further the experience.

Hi @Kevin Deezer

Thanks for the response!

Regarding the dropout issue on Chromecast Audio when using optical connection, is the root cause known? Can we expect a fix?

As far as I can tell from other threads on the subject, it is a fairly widespread problem. The issue does not happen when using analog cable connection from Chromecast Audio - only with optical.

Also the issue does not happen if casting from Google Home or any other cast-enabled App - only with Deezer.

Thanks!

Dominik

Hi

Sometimes when I open Deezer again while cast

It's show me the massage that some other device is usingy account but this is the cast device :) I know it's probably a bug but it's still great.

Another thing..in cast I don't have the option to do shuffle...and the flow seems to be a little different too (I can see the next tracks list).

since the new integration I listen to more music!thanks a lot for this perfect costumer service and devs.

Hi @Rudi,

Which version of the Android Deezer app has the new Chromecast integration?

I’m running version 6.1.22.49 (updated 16.03.2020.) and still experienced a few dropouts when casting to my Chromecast Audio connected via optical cable to a Denon receiver/amp. Might be better than before (not sure as a long time has passed), but it’s still not working flawlessly.

Thanks!
