Hi,

as you know there have been issues with the Deezer Chromecast integration for a while now and we have not seen any improvement on the situation, yet. Quite contrary, it seems to have gotten even worse.

I have therefore collected all the issues I'm seeing so far with as much detail as I can.

I urge you to act on these issues as some of them are absolutely critical for HIFI users with Chromecast.

I have done the following things to troubleshoot:
  • Exclude Deezer app from battery optimization
  • Kill App
  • Cleared SmartCache
  • Uninstalled App
  • Tried beta version of the app
  • Restart Chromecast
  • Reset Chromecast
  • Tried all of the issues with the following devices: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
  • Restart Smartphone
Issue 1 - Chromecast Audio Dropouts (as discussed here https://en.deezercommunity.com/troubleshooting-and-tips-4/chromecast-audio-issues-streaming-interrupted-4888)
Criticality: CRITICAL (listening through Chromecast is not possible without issues)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Audio (connected through 5GHz as well as 2,4Ghz)
Wifi Router: Google Wifi
Audio Quality: HiFi
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 2-4 months ago (not with the initial Chromecast HiFi streaming update)

After some time (5-20 minutes) the playback on the Chromecast Audio starts to dropout for half a second to 20 seconds. The rate of dropouts start increasing from there. The behavior can be reset by completely resetting the Chromecast Audio.

Issue 2 - Chromecast Ultra Playback skips within the track
Criticality: CRITICAL (listening through Chromecast is not possible without issues)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet)
Audio Quality: HiFi
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 4-6 weeks ago

For some tracks the Chromecast Ultra starts skipping through the song seemingly randomly (forward/backward). This happens right from the start. I have found no way to fix this issue.
Example tracks for which I can reproduce this:
Boztown - Back to the back
Culprate - Whispers, Pt. 1 (Album: Deliverance)
Culprate - The Memoirs of Gregory Otterman (Album: Deliverance)
Culprate - Acid Rain (Album: Deliverance)

Issue 3 - Chromecast freezes up after playback pause
Criticality: SEVERE (Chromecast restart is necessary)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet), Chromecast Audio (connected through WiFi)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet, Wifi)
Audio Quality: Hifi, High
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 2-4 months ago (not with the initial Chromecast HiFi streaming update)

After the playback on Chromecast has been on pause for some time it is possible that the next track cannot be played. The Android app shows the change of track and seems to be loading while the Chromecast app is inresponsive (at least this can be observed on the Chromecast Ultra which is connected to a TV). The Chromecast app cannot be changed to another app (Youtube, Netflix), instead a full restart is necessary). It is not possible to disconnect from the Deezer app.

Issue 4 - Chromecast cannot play next track
Criticality: SEVERE (Chromecast restart is necessary)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet), Chromecast Audio (connected through WiFi)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet, Wifi)
Audio Quality: Hifi (might also occur on other quality levels)
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 1-2 months ago

Sometimes it is possible that the next track cannot be played when switching to it manually. The Android app shows the change of track and seems to be loading. The Chromecast app also shows that its loading however no progress is being made for several minutes. Switching to other tracks is possible, however the initial track can only be played after killing the Android app and disconnecting from the Chromecast app, sometimes only after a restart of the Chromecast.

Issue 5 - Chromecast Audio does not buffer correctly (might be connected to Issue 1)

If the Chromecast's connection speed is insufficient for reliable playback (because there are other devices on the network using up bandwidth) it does not buffer the track correctly, instead playing 1 second of audio followed by 2-3 seconds of silence with another second of playback afterwards.

Assumptions:
Issue 1,2 and 5 are pointing to issues with the playback implementation on the Chromecast not being optimized for lossless playback.

Issue 3 and 4 might be connectivity issues between the smartphone and the Chromecast.

Issue 3 looks like an issue where the Chromecast-App gets into a deadlock state.

Personal opinion:
I switched to Deezer for its offer of HiFi audio and a less bug-ridden app than Tidal's. I stayed for Flow and the UX of the mobile app.

However since HiFi + Chromecast is how I personally use my 'big' audio system the last few weeks have been less and less enjoyable with Deezer as functionality that is being advertised (and which I am paying for) is not being delivered.

I hope for these issues (especially the critical ones) to be resolved swiftly, ideally with an issue tracker as it seems I'm not the only one seeing these issues.

I also hope that there will be regression tests added for the Chromecast apps including HiFi functionality as these issues were introduced over time.

And last but not least, while I understand that these issues are hard to troubleshoot (especially due to possibly being an issue with the mobile app or the chromecast app) it should not be the customer's duty to write detailed error reports. Maybe it is worth investing in a sufficient automated test suite as well as a good feedback tool within the mobile app that allows for useful crashtests.

Best Regards,
Alex

EDIT: Unfortunately I just saw that multiple answers are not possible with the poll.

Which of these issues are you seeing as well?

Hi there @MichelPettersson

Sorry for the way you feel. We didn't get it right the first time with Chromecast - be we're far from giving up. We've been working on a whole new integration for quite some time, so please bear with us (if you can), so that we can deliver a better service 👍🏼
Stop trying to change router settings or ipads, Androids. Its very clear that deezer have some reason they dont want to support Googles chromecast. If they haven't solved it now, they never will. All other olatforms are working just fine so either switch to them or do what deezer wsnts you to.. Replace your cca with some thing else. I for one will cancle my deezer sub. Bye!
I just got a new LG SK10Y soundbar - it has Chromecast built in. I tried to play Deezer through the soundbar using Chromecast with no luck. I clicked the cast icon, it looked like as connected, but the soundbar didn't show the connection and no audio was playing. I tried other apps with the soundbar and they worked correctly. I will try today with cleared Deezer cache. (Phone is Galaxy Note 9)
Ok, I thought I may have fixed this. I looked on the Chromecast forum. And they recommend using the 2.4 network on dual band routers. So I:

  • Uninstalled/Reinstalled Deezer
  • Factory Reset All of my Chromcast Devices
  • Set up the new Google Home Network on the 2.4 band
  • Tested on a single speaker - worked
  • Tested on the full system (4 speakers) - worked
Still experiencing the issues, this is no fun.
Tried reinstalling, works just as badly. So unfortunate bc I lost all of my downloads.

😪
No, OK i will try that and see if that helps.

Hey @CraigAScott1

Have you tried reinstalling the app to see if it works again? Let me know.
The equaliser has stopped functioning when casting to Chromecast audio. It still works when using bluetooth in my car for example. How do i get this to work again?

Hey there @Ricardo Labes

I've replied to you on another topic. Thank you for reporting the issues to us.

Hey @Bakfiets @Philip Ciaccio that's honest and sound feedback. Thank you very much for your input. @m5n0w I'm very sorry we can't get this improved/sorted yet.
I'll be insisting in passing your opinions and feedback to our devs and product managers. So once more, thank you for your patience and contribution.
I am having similar issues, multiple CCA speakers and a GH, all being controlled through the iPhone XS app. Worked great for the first few weeks, no interuptions, music would play on all 4 speakers for hours, filling my home with tunes from Deezer. Now I get one-or-two songs then it cuts out completely. And I have to kill the cast and start over. I've tried just streaming to one speaker to see if was a bandwidth issue, or an issue with CCA, or Home. Same problem. I've considered killing the app and starting over but I've downloaded over a dozen albums to play on flights, skiing, etc. and don't want to lose those, and I'm uncertain that will fix the problem.

I'm right at the end of my Hi-Fi trial, and I'm not sure I will continue if this problem(s) persist. Love the app, the selection, the quality. Sounds awesome...when it works.
Just to add that I am still having a ton of problems with Deezer + Chromecast audio. About to leave to something else really. Tried Spotify and Deezer for the free trials and liked Deezer way better, Chromecast issue is making me change.
There's so many topics on this. Hope this is the right one to report my issues.

I have a new soundbar with chromecast audio built in, and for some reason Deezer does not want to play songs to it.

On any Android device (2 phones, 1 tablet), when I select the soundbar in the cast options, the soundbar says "wifi" but nothing happens. Deezer shows the loading screen (almost there bla bla bla) but the music starts playing on the mobile device.

Things that do work
  • Any audio app that is not Deezer (eg tune in radio)
  • Playing Deezer through the Soundbar app (LG Music Flow)
  • Casting Deezer to a regular chromecast
I've also set the audio quality to Standard for casting, restarted the device, cleared my cache, updated apps / firmware.... Still it looks like it's not even trying to connect.

Any advice besides switching to Spotify?

Right, so this is really starting to take the p**s.
As mentioned above by @omer.gegic by using Samsung smart view to cast/mirror the audio to chromecast audio...
It's been working perfectly.... Until today where I try the same and deezer shows the following screenshot.
I mean, does deezer actually want us to listen to our flipping music or not?
To say I'm absolutely fuming is a massive understatement.
You (deezer) can't be bothered to get your chromecast implementation working despite still advertising it as being compatible and then a work around/alternative is suggested which works perfectly but now this stops working!
What is going on? We're all getting sick and tired of this ineptitude

.
I'm seriously thinking about feeding this information to the consumer/trade audio magazines if this isn't sorted very soon. 3 years nearly now guys?! Wtf?!

@Rudi @Flo.Deezer
Thought I’d trial Deezer but the buffering problems when using Chromecast result in constant stuttering at the start of each track. High speed Virgin internet with only one device in use so no excuse. Looks like I’ll be cancelling my subscription 😟
I’ll try again when Deezer can work properly with Chromecast.

Thanks for the feedback, @MiNiMaL_FuSS @Umar. We're working on it but we still need a bit more of your patience. I'll forward your comments to our devs.
Same issue for me too. Cant believe this is being reported for 2 years and not yet resolved. i am all for giving the smaller guys a chance and use deezer vs spotify but cant do it if the basics dont even work. If this is due to some issues on Google's Chromecast instead of frmo Deezer, this should be highlighted. Otherwise, I am moving to spotify as well.
I have this issue too.

Deezer on Android or IOS > Chromecast Audio > TOSLINK

I have tried two different Chromecast Audio's, different optical cables and even a different receiver; all suffer with audio breaks and glitches.

If I cast with Deezer to a Chromecast v1 (hdmi), it's fine - no glitches.

If I AirPlay from my IOS device to my receiver, it's fine - no glitches.

If I cast from Spotify on Android or IOS > Chromecast Audio > TOSLINK, it's fine - no glitches.

Looks pretty conclusive that it's a Deezer issue to me.

Can't believe that this has been going on for so long, with Deezer seemingly doing nothing about it.

Deezer - can we have some feedback & traction to fix please?

Thanks,

NickP

I've been experiencing exactly this issue for a couple of years now - it's very specific so you'd think deezer would be able to nail it down!

This problem persists after 2 years 😞.

I have a chromecast audio and I deal with most of the problems described above.

I found a solution, at least for me.

On Samsung devices (phone or tablet) there is an option/application called Smart View. Basically, in this case, this mirror audio from your phone / tablet to the chromcast audio.

Steps
  1. Turn on Smart View on phone
  2. Select chromcast audio as device
  3. play music on deezer on phone
After that when I "play" Deezer on phone all is working perfectly.
Deezer player -> Phone -> Smart view -> chromecast audio.

I think that this app (Samsung Smart View) is available on google play store. Maybe it can be installed on non-Samsung devices to achieve the same functionality.

I hope this will help someone.

@deezer devs chat with samsung devs and try to implement their solution in your app. Or look at their code, the source is open.

@omer.gegic this has worked perfectly for me too (using smartthings on my galaxy s10+). The only time I get issues is if I were to cast directly out of deezer with chromecast/google home app.

I am now streaming/casting via optical on chromecast audio with no drop outs. Thank you very much.
@Rudi here's some info for you to give your colleagues.

Hi everyone.
Deezer's used to all of them, he's got a lot of mistakes coming back. This time when playing through Chromecast plays only 30s of the song and jumps to the next one. Funny and tragic. I'm fighting for the return of "Hear this", and here's another argument to leave this platform..... I will return to Tidal - I am waiting, as promised, until the end of July. Unfortunately, today I started my vacation and instead of listening to my favorite music, I have to be frustrated by Deezer's miserable actions. Deezer = poverty

Bump
At least one rootcause of audio stuttering is the flawed output via digital connection (TOSLINK) on Chromecast Audio.

Please investigate!

We have to report this with some hifi magazine like whathifi or something? They deserve to get bad press. The only way to move this two year issue up.
