Hi,

as you know there have been issues with the Deezer Chromecast integration for a while now and we have not seen any improvement on the situation, yet. Quite contrary, it seems to have gotten even worse.

I have therefore collected all the issues I'm seeing so far with as much detail as I can.

I urge you to act on these issues as some of them are absolutely critical for HIFI users with Chromecast.

I have done the following things to troubleshoot:
  • Exclude Deezer app from battery optimization
  • Kill App
  • Cleared SmartCache
  • Uninstalled App
  • Tried beta version of the app
  • Restart Chromecast
  • Reset Chromecast
  • Tried all of the issues with the following devices: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
  • Restart Smartphone
Issue 1 - Chromecast Audio Dropouts (as discussed here https://en.deezercommunity.com/troubleshooting-and-tips-4/chromecast-audio-issues-streaming-interrupted-4888)
Criticality: CRITICAL (listening through Chromecast is not possible without issues)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Audio (connected through 5GHz as well as 2,4Ghz)
Wifi Router: Google Wifi
Audio Quality: HiFi
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 2-4 months ago (not with the initial Chromecast HiFi streaming update)

After some time (5-20 minutes) the playback on the Chromecast Audio starts to dropout for half a second to 20 seconds. The rate of dropouts start increasing from there. The behavior can be reset by completely resetting the Chromecast Audio.

Issue 2 - Chromecast Ultra Playback skips within the track
Criticality: CRITICAL (listening through Chromecast is not possible without issues)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet)
Audio Quality: HiFi
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 4-6 weeks ago

For some tracks the Chromecast Ultra starts skipping through the song seemingly randomly (forward/backward). This happens right from the start. I have found no way to fix this issue.
Example tracks for which I can reproduce this:
Boztown - Back to the back
Culprate - Whispers, Pt. 1 (Album: Deliverance)
Culprate - The Memoirs of Gregory Otterman (Album: Deliverance)
Culprate - Acid Rain (Album: Deliverance)

Issue 3 - Chromecast freezes up after playback pause
Criticality: SEVERE (Chromecast restart is necessary)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet), Chromecast Audio (connected through WiFi)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet, Wifi)
Audio Quality: Hifi, High
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 2-4 months ago (not with the initial Chromecast HiFi streaming update)

After the playback on Chromecast has been on pause for some time it is possible that the next track cannot be played. The Android app shows the change of track and seems to be loading while the Chromecast app is inresponsive (at least this can be observed on the Chromecast Ultra which is connected to a TV). The Chromecast app cannot be changed to another app (Youtube, Netflix), instead a full restart is necessary). It is not possible to disconnect from the Deezer app.

Issue 4 - Chromecast cannot play next track
Criticality: SEVERE (Chromecast restart is necessary)
Chromecast Device: Chromecast Ultra (connected through Ethernet), Chromecast Audio (connected through WiFi)
Router: Google Wifi (connected through Ethernet, Wifi)
Audio Quality: Hifi (might also occur on other quality levels)
Device initiating streaming: Google Pixel 1, Google Pixel 3, Xiaomi Mi A2
Deezer App Version to reproduce: Android 6.0.2.89
First occurence: 1-2 months ago

Sometimes it is possible that the next track cannot be played when switching to it manually. The Android app shows the change of track and seems to be loading. The Chromecast app also shows that its loading however no progress is being made for several minutes. Switching to other tracks is possible, however the initial track can only be played after killing the Android app and disconnecting from the Chromecast app, sometimes only after a restart of the Chromecast.

Issue 5 - Chromecast Audio does not buffer correctly (might be connected to Issue 1)

If the Chromecast's connection speed is insufficient for reliable playback (because there are other devices on the network using up bandwidth) it does not buffer the track correctly, instead playing 1 second of audio followed by 2-3 seconds of silence with another second of playback afterwards.

Assumptions:
Issue 1,2 and 5 are pointing to issues with the playback implementation on the Chromecast not being optimized for lossless playback.

Issue 3 and 4 might be connectivity issues between the smartphone and the Chromecast.

Issue 3 looks like an issue where the Chromecast-App gets into a deadlock state.

Personal opinion:
I switched to Deezer for its offer of HiFi audio and a less bug-ridden app than Tidal's. I stayed for Flow and the UX of the mobile app.

However since HiFi + Chromecast is how I personally use my 'big' audio system the last few weeks have been less and less enjoyable with Deezer as functionality that is being advertised (and which I am paying for) is not being delivered.

I hope for these issues (especially the critical ones) to be resolved swiftly, ideally with an issue tracker as it seems I'm not the only one seeing these issues.

I also hope that there will be regression tests added for the Chromecast apps including HiFi functionality as these issues were introduced over time.

And last but not least, while I understand that these issues are hard to troubleshoot (especially due to possibly being an issue with the mobile app or the chromecast app) it should not be the customer's duty to write detailed error reports. Maybe it is worth investing in a sufficient automated test suite as well as a good feedback tool within the mobile app that allows for useful crashtests.

Best Regards,
Alex

Our current Chromecast integration hasn't been stable for quite some time. So we're working on a new integration, using Google's new protocol - Cast. It should improve the whole experience, and we expect to have more updates about it before the end of this year. In the meantime, please see this topic for tips and workarounds, and try reinstalling the app and restarting your internet router to see if it helps. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi @Alex Panda, thanks for this well explained post! I will pass it on to our devs exaclity how it is! I will keep you updated as soon as I have any more news about it!
Thanks a lot for this post. I see all the issues annoying me while casting Deezer on my Chromecast audio device (issue #4 & #5). Besides them like, I'd like to stress another issue, that is already well reported in many other posts: random crackling sounds. Music doesn't stop playing, but it's like having cable interferences. The problem is that it happens only using Chromecast with Deezer. I can't understand why Tidal or Spotify that I am currently testing, work perfectly and songs listening is always clear with them. Despite I am very happy with Deezer app, I am thinking about unsubscribing and definitely switch to another service.

Hi @FEIZINGER thanks a lot for putting this together, we have passed it on to the developers who are looking into this with high priority. Please bear with us until we found the solution to all of this and can hopefully use Chromcast again without issues.

Our team is working on it with high priority, we keep pushing for it, please bear with us.
Which to choose when I am experiencing them all?

I have quite accidentally come up with a solution!

  • chromecast audio
  • dezzer on Motorola moto g4
  • deezer on 2 windows10 pcs with deezer beta desktop app
  • sometimes play deezer trough chrome browser
Irritating problem:

When I stream music through chromecast audio,
every song at certain intervals start cracking and breaking. Like a damaged cd.

When you updated the app, the issue got worse.
Only one song can listen ... and stop. No next song.
Pure horror.

The same problem occurs when I stream from the laptop through the chrome browser to the chromecast.

By the forums we see that this is a widespread problem.

I live in a residential building with lots of internet connectors and routers.
I notice that the internet is slower over wifi.
I changed the channels, but the congestion would be repeated every couple of days.
I'm surrounded by 30 routers at 2.4 ghz.

I logged in to the router and switched the wifi frequency to 5 ghz.

Since then deezer on chromecast audio works PERFECT !!
Literally perfect. Crystal sound and playlists work perfectly. Everything is loaded smoothly.

Tried HIfi subscription. Kept dropping out when using IOS app to Chromecast. Adjusted to
lower quality using Chromecast settings in audio controls.

Great app would like to use under premium if Chromecast works. Other Chromecast audio apps fine.

Do you have a plan to fix this error.

Hifi worked fine on Desktop app connected to Audiolabs QDAC via USB

Hi @srdjan73, that's amazing!

@Alex Panda, @FEIZINGER, @PaetZe , @HyperX , what do you think about @srdjan73 's solution above?

Hi, I find it is a great hint and might be beneficial for some people. But I have reason to believe it is not the solution to those streaming issues...

We have another thread on the same subject going on. Please check here for details and other users experience.

That is just a solution for when your connection is bad, everything in my house is already on 5Ghz

I know this isn't a solution for everyone, but I've found purely by accident that casting from or to a display enabled assistant results in perfect playback. Firstly casting to my Nvidia Shield works perfectly and secondly I bought a Lenovo Smart Display on Black Friday and initiating the cast from that to CCA works without a hitch. On the other side though casting from phone or tablet is still no go. Maybe something for the devs to look at!
Hi, I have experienced all issues Alex Panda described in the first post (ALL OF THEM) when casting to Chromecast Audio from IPhone 6 iOS 12.0.1 , android phone, web browser and tablet. That's why I canceled my deezer subscription two months ago. I am disappointed to see that Deezer did not fix these issues. And we can see the complaints in this forum about casting to Chromecast Audio all the time.
I tried Spotify, Google play music and Tidal with Chromecast Audio: all of them work fine without any issue. I tried to change WiFi channel, set 5ghz: nothing helped

Hi Guys, I just saw a new iOS App-Version (7.0.0) has been released. Haven't been able to download an check but maybe some of you can test it already? Release notes praise a lot of new stuff but no "bug fixing", though...

Additional faults to report:

  1. Random crackles and pops in audio after listening for a while (doesn't tend to happen for the first ~15 minutes of audio).
  2. App becomes unresponsive such that a track will be streaming on the Chromecast and trying to play a different track results in the track being played on the device whilst the other track plays simultaneously on the Chromecast.
  3. Upon casting of first track, I would say I manage to cast successfully roughly 50% of the time. I usually end up cancelling casting then trying again.
I've said this in another thread but I'll reiterate it here - Chromecast support has been awful for a long time and is only getting worse. You guys really need to sort this out.
Hi again,

Both my smartphone and Chromecast audio were already connected at 5Ghz WiFi frequency. Anyway I switched off the 2,4Ghz channel from my router settings. I was ok with doing that because all the wifi stuffs that I use at home are 5ghz compatible. Now I feel that the quality of sound of Deezer improved: no more crackling sounds etc.

The problem is that I still have issues when changing tracks, albums, etc
I still don't have the control of the music that I want to listen, because after the first 3-4-5 songs I listen, then I can't skip a song, select a new album/playlist because music is not loading properly.
I still have to continuosly switch off Deezer and stop any Chromecast transmission.. again and again and again.

code:
Hello! As for the connection quality, I already tested on two dual band routers in both bands. The problem is in Deezer itself. The spotify, tidal and youtube music work without problems. I have a short time to migrate from Deezer to spotify.
Google vs. Deezer issues !

You are all very patient endlessly tweaking the impossible Deezer HiFi to Chromecast Audio streaming malfunction. It has not worked for over a year with me (Android 8.0/5gHz).

I think Google and Deezer have rivalry or financial issues, which prevent them from cooperating together seriously.

There seems to be no other explanation to not solving these not so big software issues, than a lack of goodwill between Deezer and Goggle.

FYI: While googling for Airplay streaming of Deezer HiFi, I found this rather new Android app called AirAudio:

https://www.airaudio.eu/
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.airaudio

Maybe it can help with the known Chromecast issues, too? It seems to work only with rooted Android phones, and the demo version only works for five minutes, then it will insert peeping noises in the stream. The paid version costs €3,99. As my Samsung Galaxy II seems to be too old for the latest Deezer Android app, I cannot test any of this myself, sorry.

OK, googled some more, and this app seems to be from 2013 already, but is still being updated. Furthermore my old Samsung can install Deezer, even if it has only Android OS verson 4.1.2, nice to know. But I don't have any remote devices at home which I could test with AirAudio, I'm listening to Deezer HiFi with their desktop app exclusively which works fine.
For months and months hifi on chromecast from android devices is sold but does not work
Hundreds of people complaining on this forum for instance and the solution by deezer is...to remove the threads talking about it. Totally dishonest. How can it be?! Take care, this may disappear soon...
Indeed Deezer take care of this, lots of promises are made but without any results. A solution can be that you just admit that Deezer will never work on chromecast......
Besides all the issues reported, now I'm mainly facing issues that I start reproducing in Chromecast from Android and I can only go to next track. No more rewind, switch on/off shuttle or repeat. Only next track button appears. 😞

Solved it! Left Deezer and went to Spotify. Problems solved although the interface is not as good. Come on Deezer, I want to come back and use your HiFi version.
