Have you ever told a musical white lie?

Have you ever said to your crush that you love jazz, but your only reference is Norah Jones' “Don't Know Why”? Have you ever agreed with someone that Dolly Parton's original version of “I Will Always Love You” is way better than Whitney Houston's version just to avoid some kind of judgment? Welcome to the world of musical white lies, where everyone talks at work about the importance of Fela Kuti's songs in the music industry, but dances to “Barbie Girl by Aqua at home .

According to research carried out by Deezer surveying 8,000 adults in four different countries, 42% of people lie about songs or artists they like. The primary reason why we bluff is to avoid hurting someone’s feelings (40%). The participants revealed that they pretend to like an artist or song they’d never heard of or didn’t like (19%). They also swore to dislike a song or an artist when they actually loved them (12%).

So, there you have it. A little less than half of the people we surveyed admit to lying about their preferences. Maybe you’ve lied before or know someone who has. First dates, family dinners, job interviews… sometimes, being untruthful about our music taste is the only way to survive. Are you going to admit it?

Please, share with us your funny moments and situations that you've been through or a story you heard from a friend… Now it's time for truth!

I never thought I would be very honest about it, but my favorite female singer is Jewel and she sings COUNTRY MUSIC, not folk music as I keep telling people since I was 14! I had to lie because society has taught to! Not my fault!

This is Jewel and her giant candle:

In Germany, we have a band called "Pur", they sing Pop music in German. Everyone is saying that they are not listening to their music, yet the tours are almost always sold out 😆
It's like the German newspaper "Bild" everyone claims they are not reading it, yet it's one of the most sold newspapers 🙈

I'm sorry Jessica, I think you are still not telling us that YOU like the band. WHY ARE YOU LYING TO US?

I don't have any funny moments about this topic . 😂
I always admit the type of music I'm listening to . I also tell about my guilty pleasure . You love what you love . no place to judge in my opinion

I do have funny moments to share.

To be honest I'm always very straightforward when I'm asked what I think about a band/artist. However, I have to say that on some occasions I had to lie.

It happened probably a couple of times, when invited by people of the music industry to gigs of artists I was not particularly keen on. After the show I was asked my opinion about their artist & show and... yes, I had to lie😅

As the saying goes: don't look a gift horse in the mouth 😂

When I meet someone new, friends or dates, I comment that I play bossa nova and many people say that they love bossa nova, but they never have any example of song they "love". Honestly, I think they hate it, but they can't really say this someone they just met... I can't believe that I only meet people that belongs to the 42% group.

I actually love rock a lot. However, I am not a specialist, and I know only mainstream artists. When I am with rock fans, I just nod my head when they talk about this and that independant band that are sooo awesome. And even with mainstream artists I clearly don't know all their discography, so when I am asked which track I prefer, I go with the most well-known. It usually does the trick (they are not the most well-known for no reason, right? )

I don't know a thing about jazz, and don't really like what I hear when someone insists we listen to "free jazz". But, still, out of politeness, I listen on. My favorite answer when asked if I liked the track is "it's very interesting, thank you for the discovery".

But I am never ashamed to talk about my guilty pleasure tracks. Because, frankly, who doesn't have one ?
Personnaly, any song from "Dirty Dancing" makes the top.
