How can I improve my FLOW?

Here are the best tips for a smooth FLOW and interesting new discoveries

:heavy_check_mark: You can always click on "Add to Favourite Songs" (the small heart) or small angry-face » "Don’t recommend this track” or “Don’t recommend this artist”. These three reactions have a much stronger positive effect on your FLOW than simply skipping to the next track

:heavy_check_mark:You also have the option to click on the small angry-face and change the mood completely in case you do not like the genre or vibe at all

:heavy_check_mark:The more you listen to your FLOW and the more you click - the better your Flow algorithm

:heavy_check_mark:The best way to improve your FLOW is to mark hundreds of songs AND artists with a small heart

:heavy_check_mark:Delete songs from your favourites that you don't want to hear right now (save the song only in a playlist instead)

:heavy_check_mark:Click away the small heart of everything that belongs to a music genre that you otherwise don't like at all (save the song only in a playlist instead)

Please bear in mind that your FLOW is 50% favourites and 50% discovery

If you prefer to only listen to your Favourites instead simply listen to Shuffle My Music. If you prefer to discover more new music instead simply click on the Discover playlist next to your FLOW. You can also browse through the New releases to find new music.

Enjoy!

I don't know what is going on but my flow is completely messed up. Most songs recommend is pop or hip hop or a music genre I don't even listen to. Its not even playing a mixture of favourite songs inbetween.

Ia something wrong, and occasional different song (completely) is fine but everything playing I need to dislike at the moment.
Yeah i feel ya i hate the way flow works currently.

The other streaming service i used the tracks it recommmed were pretty good and always seemed to be on the same genre i was listening to at the time maybe Deezer could implement something like this in the future, where it had multiple playlist that play different types of music on them from what you listen to. like the daily mixes on spotify.
I never liked flow, but I think they're improving the algorithm. I still much prefer 'Hear This'.

Its been a while since I was wanting to post this but I waited so that someone from your team to figure it out and fix it.

It’s Flow again this time. The queue that Flow sets up every single day is almost the same, even the order is almost the same. Now this is not a question of me disliking or removing songs by clicking the Don’t recommend this track option. It’s about the lack of AI where Flow should try to stop repeating the same songs over and over again with one or two new suggestions every week. Its reached a point where I am having to click the “Don’t recommend this track” button for songs I like as Flow has been repeating it over and over again. At times I try skipping them but after sometime the same song pop’s up here and there.

This is really annoying and something that needs to be taken care of as it actually ruins the whole purpose of discovering new songs.

Interesting. What platform are you using Deezer on?

I don’t seem to have this problem in iOS, though I am on the beta release so not sure if there’s been any changes pending. My Flow seems quite varied and not repetitive so far.

How many tracks are in your favourites?

Userlevel 2

I am using the Deezer client on my Macbook Pro. There’s 111 tracks on my favourites. They do often keep playing a few from the favourites as well. I usually tend to skip them as its irritating to keep listening to the same songs.

Just curious, why do you ask about how many songs are there in my favourites? Does it have to do anything with the song selection Flow recommends us? If it does, then it explains a lot on why it keeps repeating my favourite list as well. Flow recommendation logic seems to be really poor in that case.

Hi @Fahim Ahmed

Flow makes suggestions from your saved music including artists and albums and playlists, but also mainly from the songs you add to your favourites.

I’d suggest adding more as you go on (e.g. I have 1400+ in mine so I get a lot more variation when I hit flow!) :)

I hope that makes sense? :)

Userlevel 2

This is hilarious. Don’t you think you have just pointed out the biggest flaw in Deezer where for a user to get a good variation of songs he needs to make sure he has 1K songs added to his favourites.

Are you kidding me??  Seriously?

Instead it should keep track of the songs the user is skipping, the ones he/she is listening, the ones he/she is avoiding from recommendation, the ones he/she is adding to their playlists etc. Can’t believe I am educating basic stuff here.

111 songs is not a lot for Deezer’s algorithms to go off to suggest new music to you though is it - i’m not saying you need thousands but just more! :)

If you dislike a song Flow plays 3 times it will never play again.  You also have the option to dislike / don’t recommend this artist - every time you do this your flow will learn and get better!

Userlevel 2

Thanks @Rob Igo for the great insight. Glad you are still not able to get to what I am pointing out here.

It seems Flow is not smart enough to track user behaviour and their tastes but depends on a favourites list using which it will send you a bunch of tracks which you would skip and this cycle would repeat in an endless loop. I wonder how a user who does not use the favourite feature would be treated to

I don’t think there is any point in this discussion. Thanks for the effort.

Disappointed !!

Hi there@Fahim Ahmed

Thanks for your honest feedback. I'd say it's extremely difficult for any algorithm to guess what a user wants without the input of this same user. Without data, it can't work to its best potential.

So essentially, Rob answer is right - the more input you give the app, the better it'll suggest you other tracks and artists which you may like. It wouldn't be accurate to suggest tracks based on another one you've listened to but didn't tell the app you like it. Thank you for your understanding.

I actually agree 100% with Fahim. The number of songs in your library should have absolutely no bearing on the VARIETY of songs played by Flow. It should only effect the ACCURACY of those recommendations. A new user with no library whatsoever should still be played a wide variety of music, probably skewed towards music that is generally popular. By 111 songs there should be no impediment to playing a relatively focussed and varied mix of songs.

We agree with that @teqteq. But for more variety, you need to give the app more input, for example, the Discovery card. Feedback noted though! Thank you for your support :thumbsup_tone2:

Thanks Pia for the summary, so anything saved in a playlist does not count, neither for Flow nor for my recommendations, right? Only if it is also in my favorites?

That last point is not ideal in my opinion and might explain why my Discover playlist annoys me with ‘80s pop hits every week, because I favorited two Tears For Fears songs recently. So I still like those songs and wouldn’t think of disliking them, only because my recommendations go nuts afterwards. Especially because these songs are the exception in my library, not the rule which are totally different genres.

Hey @bluezzbastardzz

So that our users know as well, I've contacted our devs about this to see if there's anything they can do or suggest to make your experience better  I'll let you know once I get a response.

I think the biggest issue is I listen to flow when I drive.i find the flow is in a contast repeat. The tracks are in the same order and goes round in a circle. I do listen to music at gone and try to click I like a song when I can. I have 1000s of songs in my favourites. Its just frustrating it's almost on a continued loop without mixing it up. I am sure a few years back it wasn't like this

Hi @Leanne Coy

Sorry to hear what's happening. It shouldn't repeat itself. Have you tried clearing your app's cache to see if it helps?

I shall try this however I am worried it will forget all the songs I dislike and start playing them again

Hi @Leanne Coy no worries, it will not forget that

Please try all the tipps and tricks to improve your Flow at the top of this page.

Myflow is mostly fine. I have maybe 850+ songs in my favorites and seems to be enough that it gives variety and a lot of songs I've not heard before (though not necessarily good ones).

Hi @stevenomes have you tried all tipps and tricks mentioned above? This should improve the quality of your FLOW experience

I’m a control system integrator who recommends Deezer to a multitude of customers with our systems primarily because of the flow feature. That said, I’m also having issues with flow, somehow its always pushing french rap on me. I’m not french and I listen to (mostly) rock. I find myself spending more time disliking / excluding artists than listening at this point. It’s starting to get frustrating as the Flow feature was the main reason I started subscribing and why I recommend this service.

Also, just a recommendation, Xmas music should be excluded from flow… I put a few songs on during the holidays now I get Barbra Streisand White Christmas in March...

Dev’s, please improve the flow feature or make it easy to reset / revisit flow settings (if this is already an option please direct me)

Hi @masson_c Thank you for contacting us and thank you so much for recommending Deezer

We are sorry to hear you are receiving so many wrong recommendations 😕 Have you really tried all of the 6 tips & tricks mentioned at the top of this page?

Christmas songs are always excluded from the Flow. In case you do encounter one, please send us artist, title and Deezer URL link and we tag this song with “Christmas” to exclude it for everyone. I already did this for Barbra Streisand - White Christmas

I’ve only been using Flow for a week or so, and the repetition is starting to get to me.

It does seem to play some new songs, some I understand why, some seem out of the blue.  I click the Don't recommend this track often.  Today I noticed that at least 4 songs didn’t have the Don’t recommend this track button. I don’t remember the actual terminology, but it had something to do with restoring the track out of my do not recommend list.

Why is Flow:

  1. Repeating songs so often?
  2. Playing songs I’ve already flagged as Do not recommend?
