Deezer listening to Community: read about our Live Q&A with users!

Userlevel 2

Hey, everyone!

In case you’re asking yourself ‘who’s this girl?’, I’ll answer that first: I’m the French and girly version of our beloved @Rudi:smile:

I currently manage our French Community and I want to share with you something exciting that happened recently.

You’ve been asking for more transparency and communication from Deezer, and we heard you: we organised the very first Live Q&A between our teams and users
Online, yes, we’re social distancing. :mask:

We first wanted to test the waters with our French users, and it went very well. You might be next!

Meanwhile, here is a sum up of what has been discussed.

THE COMPANY

French Community Legends discussed for almost 2 hours with various people from Deezer: Product Team, Product and Partnerships Manager, User Researcher, Director of Data Science, Customer Success… Their missions cover every aspect of your Deezer experience!

  • Goals, strengths, ambitions?

With around 600 employees, Deezer wants to “do things differently”, and “be as close as possible to our users and partners”. In comparison, some competitors are “behemoths”.

Content is at the heart of everything we do, and the main goal is to give access to users to their content, wherever they go.
We work on this goal considering the following challenges: evolution of audio content type, evolution of how we consume content, technical changes, growing list of devices… in more than 180 countries!

One of the main strengths highlighted by Deezer is the perfect mix between algorithms and hand-curated content.

Content prepared by “passionate people who love and understand music”, Deezer Editors, trains and helps algorithms.

This is particularly important to respect each country’s musical culture and be as close as possible to users expectations in each region.

The main ambition is to have strong positions in certain countries. While maintaining its position in France and Brazil, Deezer continues investing in MENA and is growing in very interesting countries across Latin America.

  • How does Deezer listen to users?

It’s very important for Deezer to understand your needs and your wishes. We make strategic decisions informed by user feedback.

We listen to you across different channels: App stores, Customer service teams, Deezer Community, Social Media, User research...

Our VP Product insisted that his teams definitely listen to you, but specified that listening doesn’t always mean that we can deliver everything, and quickly.

Choices have to be made, and delivering a new feature requires multiple phases and takes time.

OFFERS

  • New Deezer Family System

You’ve been asking for it, a new Deezer Family system is coming in the next couple of days!

It was presented exclusively to our Community Legends, and has been described as a “hybrid system”.  An article will be published very soon with all details.

  • Deezer HiFi + Family ?

We definitely have your request about this in mind. However, no decision has been made yet.

Launching a new offer doesn’t depend on Deezer only. It requires an agreement from all content rights holders, with many discussions around justification, subscribers estimation, impact on other offers, decision around the price…

That’s a lot of negotiations!

UCPS & CONTENT LIMITS

  • UCPS, when is it coming?

Everything is ready on our side, technically, but it doesn’t depend on us. We need unanimous endorsement from content rights holders, and negotiations are long and complicated.

The current pandemic didn’t help, but we have good hope that UCPS can start in France, and then have a snowball effect on other markets.

  • What about content limits?

We’re planning for it! We would like to work on it in Q3, we can hope for some progress around this before the end of the year. “

The idea is to push certain limits while finding the best compromise between usage and service performance for everyone.

SOCIAL FEATURES  & RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Social features

Deezer is starting a new project and first has to understand your needs, what users want to do exactly: comment, talk to each other, give likes...? Users gave some explanations around this and highlighted the difference between external sharing and internal interactions.

A team will work on this in the next few months and will decide which features add value and can be integrated. They will also take into consideration sharing features within a Family offer

  • Recommendations: current system and future improvements?

Data Science Team, in charge of algorithms, works hand in hand with Product and User Research Teams to understand your expectations and offer you the most personalized experience possible.

Our Director of Data Science explained:

We take all the signals you send while using your app to create a user profile

We think about everything and we try to ask ourselves the right questions, as an example: if you listened to one song just one night, is it relevant to use it for your recommendations? Or if you’ve been listening to Rock music for years, and you’re now exploring new genres since a week, isn’t it too early to take it into account for your profile?

On the other hand, musical content is “mapped”, with relations between different artists and titles, depending on tracks similarity, or if users have been listening to tracks together…

With the users profile and the mapped content, that’s how we try to create a musical experience as personalized as possible.

We’re really listening to your feedback and we take it into consideration to work on our algorithms, and we heard you saying you want a less repetitive Flow!

  • Customizable Flow?

This algorithm is really complex and endless, it’s a challenge to find the best tailored experience for each and every user

Allowing Flow customization can be an answer for certains users, while others will feel lost.

Deezer didn’t find the perfect solution yet, but we’re constantly working on it. The unhappy emoji in your Flow is a start: you can use it to tell our algorithms to try another way.

DEVICES & COMPATIBILITY

  • Deezer on Samsung watches?

Deezer is still working closely with Samsung on different topics, including this one.

POC (Proofs of Concept) have been made and highlighted technical challenges, especially with our player. Our team is working with Samsung to try and find solutions, but it takes time.

Honestly, it hasn’t been a priority, but the door isn’t closed.

  • A standalone app for Apple Watch?

Deezer is on it!  We completed a POC cycle, we studied technical possibilities and constraints, we know exactly what we’ll be able to do or not.

The team now needs to define the product and might start developing it in the next quarter.

  • Linux app: what’s up?

It wasn’t abandoned but unprioritised.

Our Linux App made a lot of progress, but our teams had technical issues with the Release Pipeline, the automatisation part for new versions and updates management. Other topics had more priority. We’ll need to find time.

  • Any API updates?

Users suggested that a more regular update of the public API with more features allowed could help with Deezer’s integration on various platforms (ie: Discord).

Answer:

Our public API is still updated, to evolve with our private API. Some features are indeed missing, but for some Deezer actually doesn’t have the right to give access to it.

The situation is evolving: Deezer is working on a Smart TV project which needs a public API system overhaul, and rights might change soon.

We can then expect an update and more features in the coming months!

“DEEZER CONNECT”, the remote control feature

This is the most asked feature on the Community, allowing remote control on other devices from the mobile app.

Why did you change your mind and what were the challenges?

We understand and we hear your request perfectly.

This project is on hold, and is more complex than it seems. It requires a certain number of our teams, a lot of time, and a main focus.

Deezer doesn’t have the same development power and resources than its competitors, we need to prioritize and make choices.

We had indeed technical challenges, which represent a huge work. We can mention the need to refactorize our player and new API and SDK systems…

We also have other constraints to take into account: service requirements, legal aspects…

We worked on it, we found out that it’s a huge project with pre-requisites needed, so we choose to focus on other topics, like Chromecast.

The market has evolved, with the frequent integration of AirPlay and Chromecast on many devices. The Chromecast topic impacted a lot of users so we spent a lot of time on it and worked on a new integration with the new protocol from Google.

We think about facilitating device discovery from the mobile app. We also think about protocols like DLNA and UPNP, which are a bit more discrete, but our audiophiles partners are starting to ask for it.

We don’t exclude working  on ‘Deezer Connect’, as it can be part of our global “device discovery” reflexion. Moreover, recent evolutions within Deezer allow us to “reopen this case”.

Hello @Sergi.Sanz, the way it was done on the FR Community, it was a Zoom meeting between our superusers and some members of the Deezer staff from various teams  Thank you for gathering all those topics, this is indeed the kind of subjects that were discussed and that you should be pushing forward.

Have a nice day

A little surprised the issue of using playlists from Alexa or Google Assistant devices didn’t come up.  Alexa remains my primary way of playing music (at home, increasingly in may car), so not being able to select a playlist is incredibly aggravating.

Certainly not going to use my phone...I play music to get away from my phone, not be even more chained to it! :)

Hello @santama, that’s actually a good suggestion. Before the Q&A session, we asked users to share their questions on a thread on the French Community, and you can imagine that we got a huge amount of questions that needed to be gathered and sorted by our superusers. And despite doing that, it wasn’t possible for them to ask everything due to a limited time. However, as mentioned, we are planning to do this again for every Community, so this could be worth requesting

Wauw, this is a nice article! A good resume of much things that are going on and are requested by many!

Nice to read something about the team and goals!

I can’t tell enough how good the progress of this app is! Much respect for everyone of you working around the clock for this streaming service!

@Martijn.Keymis, thanks a lot for the positive feedback, it’s much appreciated

On the spotify platform, the selection of random music seemed quite personal and personalized with some delicate situations in my personal life, I felt that it knew too much about me and made me feel harassed ... However, I must admit that it was music that I had added to this playlist, but even so it felt very personal and I felt very invaded by my privacy.

After thinking of a solution for that bad selection of songs, I came up with a wheel-shaped song selection screen, so with your finger you can turn that wheel and the song that comes out selected after the roulette loses its pulse and completely stop falling without tricks and without invasion of privacy in the song that comes out, hey, what do you think! do it guys!

This is very exciting news for the Deezer-usig community, Either way, i’m most excited for, well, everything, but the Discord integration is the most exciting part. Please add it, as fast as possible, it’s a highly expected feature that Discord themselves said they want it, but you would have to contact them first. Either way, please add it, we really need it. Oh, and fix the Last.FM connection, i can’t access it since after i click allow, it just comes back to Deezer’s home page, with nothing changed, and i tried through multiple devices.
