After all these changes (standardization of prices, getting rid of free plan), is Deezer finally bringing UCPS?

Bringing UCPS would be the only thing that would make sense if Deezer wants to stand out. For the rest it’s only turning into the most expensive alternative in the market for no reason.

As Jaime posted a few months ago: “Deezer has everything needed to launch a UCPS pilot roll out but we need all the labels to approve it in order to proceed. We continue to provide labels with all the information necessary for their analysis and are working hard to get consensus so that UCPS can be implemented as soon as possible.”

The music labels are the roadblock here.

Look at Tidal, who recently heavily advertised their new “Fan-centered Royalties” plan, presumably to justify their subscription fees being twice the industry standard.

Even if you pay for their top tier, the fan centered royalties are not in place. Tidal says that they have been unable to reach an agreement with the labels (sound familiar?) so they are simply giving the money to the labels and hoping that they do the right thing.

Their direct artist payout offers up to 10% of the extra $10 per month that you are paying. So Tidal takes an extra 10 bucks from you, and possibly gives two dollars of that to your favorite artist?

And all this from a company that was investigated for streaming fraud, for falsifying numbers so that their friends Kanye and Beyoncé could be paid more.

Even Spotify said they would participate in a UCPS-type plan if the industry (read: the labels) were willing to overhaul the existing standards. Plot twist: the labels aren’t willing.

No streaming service has this. Not one. At least deezer is trying.
