Cannot quit Deezer in Android 8.1 without Force Stopping in Android Setting/Apps

Is anybody else having this issue? The app notification is "stuck" in the Status Bar and won't swipe off. Go into Open Apps Overview screen and kill the app there while playing a track, and the track just keeps on playing....

So you have to into Android Settings/Apps/etc to find Deezer Force Stop to finally kill it...

Just pausing playback without Force Stopping has already cause a few embarrassing resumptions of playback through phone speakers.

According to Deezer Support, a developer says this is "Expected behaviour for Android 8.0 and above". I think this is utterly lazy & dismissive when no other app I've installed behaves this way, and needs to be fixed - especially when you pay a Prem+ subscription as I do. Thoughts?

Thanks a lot for your feedback @focused_mayer very detailed and honest.

I totally understand the impact on our UX, so I've forwarded what you said and your screenshot to our Android developers. I remember that we had some limitations when looking at this in the past, so I hope we can reignite the discussion on this option :thumbsup_tone2:

Hi @testarossa, that's very random! Have you tried reinstalling the app? Do you use an SD card? Please let me know! 😉

Hi @Rafael ,

Yes, app was reinstalled, and yes, am storing to SD. Bear in mind however that Support have stated it's expected behaviour with Android 8+...

I had the very same issue last year with a different phone running 6.0.1 but back then Deezer fixed the app...

Hi, thanks for letting me know.

This is happen because of the sd card - we recommend al users to use the phone's memory only.

Could you try the following steps, exactly in this order, to see if it helps with your issue?

  • make sure you're connect to a wifi network
  • uninstall Deezer
  • clean your phone's cache
  • remove the SD card
  • turn off your phone
  • reinstall Deezer
  • open Deezer and download at least one album or playlist
  • reinsert the SD card
let me know if it helps!

I've already done all the above except removing SD card or downloading media to phone memory. However, the SD-Card is configured a Internal Memory and so is Android file structure so why should the app treat any differently? Also, if I stream a non-downloaded track on Flow, it still will not quit by normal means.

Let me know your opinion on these points before I reluctantly go through yet another uninstall/reinstall/redownload experience.

sometimes the phone automaticity moves the app to the sd card, therefore is important to follow the procedure in the exaclity order, specially when it says open Deezer and "download at least one album or playlist" before reinsert the sd card back in.

Hi @raphael ,

Just completed all the steps you suggested and there is no change...
I second that the lack of a stop button is the worst design feature as well. If you force stop the app before pausing your song you have to restart your phone! If you are casting to a ChromeCast you cant stop the app from casting. Someone needs to look at fixing this asap as it makes the app extremely frustrating to use.

I too was told its "by design" by support when I reported it as a defect.

THANK you! I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one here....!

Bottom line is that we shouldn't have to Force Stop the app to stop playing or casting (which I haven't tried myself). It's up to Deezer to keep up with Android developments, not the other way round. Most other vendors do, and I'm going to test Google Play and maybe free Spotify shortly. If Deezer would actually commit to fixing this rather than flailing about with mixed messaging I'd actually be happy...

@testarossa happy to forward all of this to our developers!

I personally am quite okay with this feature. I regularly quit all apps with the open apps overview. Previously, I'd do that, then notice that my music stopped, ask myself why I didn't remember to keep Deezer open, and then reopen Deezer, find the album/playlist I was playing and only then resume playing. Not happening anymore 😁
Not sure if you get my point, but this would be another perspective on this.

Now I just pause the music in the notification bar and then quit Deezer in order to stop the app.

Hi @Shannon ,

The current method is not okay if you want a clean & intuitive way to quit the app. The current method is frankly cumbersome and non-intuitive. And I have finally figured out how to quit from the notification panel - apparently I haven't been waiting as looooong as Deezer requires me to wait before I am finally permitted to swipe the thing off - this after I have first paused playback. Absolutely Bonkers!

I will still contend that closing in Open Apps View is a positive action expected to close the app entirely - playback, notification, and all - otherwise imo the behaviour's non-standard. I have never quit Deezer accidentally by that method and if I did I certainly wouldn't think of blaiming the app?!! Sounds like a custom "feature" to suit a very few people tbh...

This is still present. Its a really dumb feature if you ask me.

Hi there @BobTC22

Sorry you're experiencing that. In what OS and app version can you see it?

Clearly this issue has never been looked into properly as it’s still a problem now in 2020. Cant close the app on android and ios. Only option is to pause.

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us @Lucy Haugh

This is possible on iOS but not completely feasible on Android at the moment. You'll need to pause, yes. But we're currently planning a bunch of improvements for our Android app and this will once more come into discussion :v_tone2:

Okay it’s April 2021.  I just started a free trial of Deezer.  This issue is sending me back to Spotify.  What an absolute annoying problem.  If Deezer still hasn’t got their crap together over 2 years later on this issue, then I can’t imagine it’s going to be a good platform.

Thank you for checking on us by trialling the app @lghend I'll pass on your feedback!

Have a nice weekend :relaxed:

How it looks for me:

It’s indeed a very annoying bug. As you can see it takes up almost half the screen, preventing more settings (like airplane mode, flashlight etc.) to show up. There is no way to get rid of it except killing the process. Every other app I have that plays audio can be closed with an “X” where the red circle is.

This is a recent problem for me, I didn't have this problem a month ago. I use Android 11 and the latest version of the app. I hope you can fix this because this impacts UX in a very negative way.
