Android Auto - crashes and quirks

For a long time I have been experiencing issues with Deezer on Android auto. The last year I haven’t been driving much, but still I experienced troubles when I do.

First is a quirk that happens frequently: when I am in the menu (where I can choose to play flow, look for a playlist and such), after about two seconds, the cursor jumps back to the first item in the list. Every time again. So I need to be really quick to choose the option I want.

The second thing is more annoying: the Deezer app freezes and becomes unresponsive in such way that the whole screen goes black and the app restarts. Sometimes this issue comes up pretty quickly, sometimes it takes longer.

You know when it begins, because the app first starts to lag in its response to the rotary dial. It can take up to 30 seconds before it reacts to my input. Shortly after this, everything freezes, the whole screen goes black and Deezer restarts. On other days it can take up to an hour before it crashes though. Most often, after the restart the system is fine for the rest of the journey. During the restart, navigation keeps working and the stream keeps on playing.

I have already cleared the cache, reinstalled Auto and Deezer, rebooted the phone etc, but this works only temporarily. I have seen the issue for way over a year now, so despite all the version updates, it is not yet resolved.

Version info

  • Deezer 6.2.29.66
  • Android Auto 6.5.612134
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 SM-G973F/DS Android 11
  • Car system: Alfa Romeo Giulia 2018 with 8” screen

I really hope there is a solution to this, because I listen to music most often in my car.
Any ideas what this can be and how to resolve it?

Hi there @sir_c

Thanks for reaching out about this and providing a very detailed feedback.

I've passed all your comments to our devs for investigation. Once I get a reply, I'll let you know!

Other issue is there is no downloaded podcasts list in the android auto.

@sir_c are you able to try connecting to Auto on another car?  Is the problem replicated?

Hello, a different car I can't try, because I am the only one with Android Auto functionality. Especially for testing for prolonged time.

However, I can say that I have ruled out one thing out of the equation. Since a few weeks I have a new phone.

Now I have an Oppo Find X3 Neo, and on two or three of my trips I have seen the same things happening as described in the OP. So my conclusion is that there are some things Deezer does not like about my car. Google Maps works alright, just like phone calls using AA.
